Summary:  Eastern's Network Support Engineer (NSE) supports, monitors, and maintains the computer networks that enable our business. An essential part of our team, the NSE has primary responsibility for ensuring stability in our network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls), networks (internet and local), and servers. This includes troubleshooting reported issues and outages as well as planning for and completing upgrades, patches, and repairs. The NSE will also provide advice and assistance to our "Tier 1" support staff on more complicated technical issues. The right person for this position is technically skilled, teamwork-oriented, and enjoys technical problem-solving.

 

Our server environment includes Windows Server 2008R2, 2012, 2016, RHEL 7, and VMware 6.0 and 6.5. Our network is comprised of equipment from Cisco (switches and routers), Watchguard (firewall), and Silverpeak (SD-WAN appliance).

 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide a stable networking environment through the monitoring and maintaining of production servers and network equipment; this requires proactive efforts as well as timely responses to issues initiated through trouble-tickets (Quest Kace).
  • Provide advanced technical support as requested by "Tier 1" support staff.
  • Plan updates and upgrades to server and networking equipment as required. Implement approved changes to server and networking equipment.
  • Maintain, and update as needed, accurate technical documentation for the network.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with additional IT tasks and functions as requested by the Director of IT.
  • Engage and manage communication with service providers as required to troubleshoot WAN outages.
  • Validate the integrity of backups as required by the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity plan.
  • Identify and propose changes to our IT practices to improve data confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Qualifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

  • Education and/or Experience: Prefer Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience or certifications for Windows Server and Cisco Networking environment preferred.

 

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

 

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
